Harmony and contentment are evoked in this important and beautiful carving. The ancient Hawaiian concept of interconnectedness between humankind and nature is expressed here. The sun's rays warm and give power to this goddess of beauty as she closes her eyes and stretches her arms toward the sky. A bird's wing curves upward, mimicking the goddess's rejoiceful stance and delicately framing the right side of the composition. Life is seen as a whole, not merely the sum of parts. This piece is one of two in a series called "Clouds of Venus."
