Seaflower #8 is an original surfboard sculpture by Hawaiʻi artist Ruben Aira Jr., carved from reclaimed surfboard noses and tails. Inspired by the meeting point of marine and botanical forms, the work transforms discarded surfboard material into an elegant sculptural composition that evokes petals, shells, fins, and ocean movement.

Part of Ruben’s Seaflower series, Seaflower #8 continues his exploration of land and sea as interconnected worlds. The sculpture’s layered forms reference both Siliqua patula and Ravenala madagascariensis, blending the language of shell, flower, and tropical plant life into a refined contemporary work of sustainable Hawaiian art.

“My Seaflower series represents the merger of land and sea. The people of Hawaiʻi spend their lives between these two worlds, embraced by the endless beauty above and below the ocean’s surface.” — Ruben Aira Jr.

Original works are hand-carved, painted, and finished by Ruben Aira Jr. in his Oʻahu studio. Each piece is one of a kind — no two are alike.

Every original artwork is crafted by hand with care, patience, and presence. Some pieces take months to complete. Inspired by the spirit of Hawaiʻi, Ruben’s work carries the ocean into the process itself — the sound of waves in every strike of the chisel, every brush stroke, and every final finishing touch.
