Seaflower #7 is a mixed media surfboard sculpture by Hawaiʻi artist Ruben Aira Jr., created from repurposed surfboards and layered sculptural materials. Part of his Seaflower series and the collection Noses Tails & Fins: Surfboard Resurrected, the work merges Hawaiian flora and marine life into a dimensional celebration of land, sea, and renewal.

Selected for the Artists of Hawaiʻi Biennial 2024 at Downtown Art Center, Seaflower #7 reflects Ruben’s distinctive practice of transforming surfboards into fine art. The sculpture embodies the interconnected beauty of Hawaiʻi’s natural world, where plants, sea creatures, ocean culture, and sustainable material transformation meet in one powerful sculptural form.

“My Seaflower series represents the merger of land and sea. The people of Hawaiʻi spend their lives between these two worlds, embraced by the endless beauty above and below the ocean’s surface.” — Ruben Aira Jr.

Original works are hand-carved, painted, and finished by Ruben Aira Jr. in his Oʻahu studio. Each piece is one of a kind — no two are alike.

Every original artwork is crafted by hand with care, patience, and presence. Some pieces take months to complete. Inspired by the spirit of Hawaiʻi, Ruben’s work carries the ocean into the process itself — the sound of waves in every strike of the chisel, every brush stroke, and every final finishing touch.
